Not In My Name Supports Israeli Soldiers Refusing to Serve in the Occupied Territores

Not In My Name, a Chicago-based organization of Jews who are working to end the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, will hold a vigil on Sunday, February 10, from Noon to 1 PM in front of the Water Tower Plaza, Michigan Avenue at Pearson to proudly support the growing number of Israeli soldiers, officers, and conscripts who are refusing to serve in the Occupied Territories.  These people of conscience, supported by many within Israeli society, have kindled a new wave of hope for peace.  Their public statements are moving, and express Jewish values of human dignity, which many feel have been systematically removed from their daily lives by their duties of imposing humiliation and oppression on Palestinians.

The NIMN vigil will be an act of solidarity with, and a continuation of, the Saturday evening demonstrations in Israel that have been organized to support these courageous men and women.  The demonstration in Tel-Aviv is designed to be a joint Jewish-Arab affair, and is being called by nearly 20 organizations, including, Gush-Shalom, Yesh Gvul, Women's Coalition for Peace, Ta'ayush (Arab-Jewish Partnership), The Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, The Druze Initiative Committee, Hadash Youth and Balad Youth, "A Different Voice in Galilee" (a joint association of Jews from the Misgav Region and Arabs from the neighboring towns of Sakhnin and Arabeh), and a host of others.

The rally in Tel-Aviv will begin with a moment of silence in memory of all victims of the past year and half.  Participants will hold aloft hundreds of black flags-both as a sign of mourning and as a reminder of the Israeli Supreme Court's 1958 verdict that stated that "On certain orders the black flag of manifest illegality flies...A soldier has not only the right but also the duty to disobey such orders."

Many statements by, and articles about, these refuseniks can be found on our web site:  There are also links to some of their organizations and groups that support them.  NIMN is a Chicago-based Jewish peace group working for a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians; it calls for an end to Israel's occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem as a crucial first step towards this peace.
